
Project Overview
The KETTAL Showroom Steel Canopy Strengthening Project in Dubai reflects Moduline Engineering Consultancy’s expertise in structural assessment, steel connection repair, and remedial structural design.
Located in Jumeirah Third, Dubai, the project involved the inspection of a steel canopy structure where anchor bolt failure, loosened nuts, visible connection gaps, and cracking at the RCC beam were observed during construction.
The proposed solution restored the structural integrity of the canopy and ensured safe performance in line with local code requirements, demonstrating Moduline’s capability in Advanced Structural Engineering Services across Dubai and the UAE.
Engineering Challenge
During the construction of the steel canopy, a complete failure of the connection system was observed in the steel canopy structure. The following were documented:
Primary failure in the anchor bolts at the canopy connections
Loosened or dislodged bolt nuts, resulting in clear shear failure of the bolts
A noticeable gap between the RCC beam and the steel connections
A crack exceeding 5 mm at the corner of the beam

Engineering Solution
It was found that the bolts were drilled and installed into the slab cover, which weakened the concrete at the corner and caused the concrete wedge to fail when loads were applied, leading to a progressive collapse as the load transferred to the adjacent connection.
A strengthening system was proposed by installing an oblique member (kicker beam) to support the canopy from its free end, anchored to the RCC beam using 150 mm long bolts. Additional plates and triangular stiffeners were added to enhance load-bearing capacity at the cantilever plate ends. The proposed system was analyzed under two different conditions, and the results confirmed that all elements are safe (utilization factor below 1.0), ensuring structural integrity is restored while complying with local code requirements
